From Cap & Gown to Career: Hannah Yonts-Lawrence ’22

How did your professors/staff help prepare you for your next step?

My professors provided guidance on course selection, helping me choose the right classes that aligned with my career goals and the requirements of pharmacy school. They shared advice on study techniques, time management, and exam preparation to aid in my academic success. With their lead, I worked on research projects gaining hands-on experience and developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

When it came to my pharmacy school application, my professors were instrumental. They wrote strong letters of recommendation that highlighted my academic achievements, skills, and potential as a future healthcare professional. Their advocacy and support played an important role in strengthening my application and increasing my chances of admission.

My professors were more than educators; they were mentors who invested in my success. Their unwavering support, knowledge, and guidance helped me navigate the path to pharmacy school with confidence and prepared me for the next chapter of my academic and professional journey.

How did your academic experience help prepare you?

My coursework gave me a solid foundation in chemistry and biology and equipped me with the necessary knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts. The classes challenged me to develop effective study habits before pharmacy school. I had the opportunity to engage with my future profession as a pharmacy intern while fulfilling Honor’s College credits. The internship allowed me to gain practical experience and first-hand insight into my future. It enhanced my understanding of the profession and solidified my interest and commitment to pursuing my PharmD. My academic experience at Brescia -the coursework coupled with my internship experience- gave me a competitive edge as an applicant and showcased my dedication to pursuing a career in pharmacy.

How did your student experience prepare you?

Being a student-athlete on the women’s volleyball team, a member of numerous organizations, and an elected official of student government, I was highly involved on campus. Working with teammates or club members helped me develop the interpersonal skills that are required to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care. Being involved in extracurriculars alongside academic commitments required effective time management and organizational skills. Balancing class with practice schedules, competitions, club meetings, and work taught me how to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain a well-rounded lifestyle. These skills prepared me to manage pharmacy school’s demanding curricula, engage in experiential learning, and create a work-life balance.
